Pay the hotel when you stay

San Francisco can be a travelers dream, but is also a hotel planner’s nightmare.  The city is a mix of hundreds of little neighborhoods and sub-neighborhoods, each one with its own culture.  You can have a taste of almost anything when you visit the city.  Where should you stay when you visit San Francisco?  It becomes the $64,000 question.

Choose the waterfront during peak season, and it can be the $64,000 answers.  Not literally, of course, but many of the hotels with an unobstructed view of the water or beach access are quite expensive.  You will want to balance your desire to be close to the water with your budget and your desire to compete with the crowds of others who want the same thing. If you are a gourmand or chow hound, it is possible to use restaurants as your anchor points.  From China Town to Ghirardelli Square, there are dozens of world renowned restaurants waiting to be enjoyed.  Choosing a hotel close to at least one of your desired eating destinations can save valuable time.

The city is well networked with transportation systems, however, and you will want to take those into consideration as you plan your trip.  A compromise of waterfront for a more affordable hotel near a transit connection can leave you with more money for tours, wine country, and souvenirs.

As you plan your booking, note that peak season in the summer and near the year-end holidays means higher rates.  Shoulder season in spring and fall brings a 20 – 30% discount on room rates throughout the city.  Don’t be afraid to experiment with some of the design hotels in the city, either.  With its vibrant artists culture, San Francisco has some of the most cutting edge decorating and layout formats of any city in the world.
