Finding a hotel in New York is easy; finding an affordable and conveniently located hotel for your specific purpose may not be so easy.  The capital of the world certainly has many rooms available, but some of the most premier locations are out of reach for the average tourist.  Fortunately, there is enough variety among the five boroughs of the city that you can enjoy New York even if you are not a movie star or Wall Street titan.

The key is balancing priorities and taking the time to learn about the subway system.  New York is one of the best connected cities in the United States, but many visitors don’t look outside of Manhattan.  While average room rates in Manhattan can be more than $300 per night, room rates of $150 per night can be had in Queens or Brooklyn, both of which offer quick access to the central attractions.

New York hotels often have excellent dining facilities, which compensates for a lack of other amenities.  It is very difficult to find parking in New York, and while workout rooms are common, large swimming pools and sun decks are not.  Additionally, New York hotels often have front desk staff, concierges, valets, bellhops, and a number of other staff who should be tipped, which can be confusing to out of town guests.  A quick etiquette search online will ensure no feelings are hurt.

A final tip is to be sure to book well in advance, especially on the holidays.  The Christmas shopping season is a no-vacancy time of year, although there will be plenty of rooms available in the sweltering August months.  Choosing your hotel in advance will allow you to make the best choice for your budget and your destinations, and 30 – 60 days lead time for a trip is common.
