This traditionally French area of Canada is known for its unique architecture and outstanding food. The hotels of Montreal are equally varied and interesting. While there are centainly the usual chain offerings, many of the city's hotels are specialized, privately run facilities that can delight the architecturally curious and the adventurous.

Bookings will be the biggest issue, especially in the old town area. Historical buildings are certainly charming, but they can't be destroyed to add capacity. If you are planning to be in town for one of the bigger festival events, you will want to book your rooms at least 2 months in advance to ensure availability.

Culturally, you will also want to be mindful of the French labeling and French habits that dominate the area. Restrooms are often done in the European style, with removable showrheads and bidets. The furnishing and decor of each room also tend to show their European influences, and if you would like a non-smoking room, you should specifically request it as Quebec residents are not the same anti-smoking campainers are their Southern neighbors.

Hotels on the St. Lawrence river command higher rates than hotels in other parts of the city, so you will want to balance your desire for the lush modern landscapes of the city against your budget.  Navigating Montreal is relatively straightforward, so staying further out from the center of town is not an isolationist move.  Taxis are available and rates are reasonable.

If possible, you will want to get a hotel with its own restaurant, or at least near some nice cafes.  The food culture of the city is legendary, and if you miss out on the French pastries, special gravy fries, and elegant microbrews you may never forgive yourself.  Montreal’s hotels and dining culture were meant to help you enjoy the finer aspects of life, and the city certainly welcomes you to do so.
