In the beautiful region of Canterbury in New Zealand’s South Island you will find some outstanding accommodation options. There are small boutique 5 star hotels within easy travel distance of the city and the airport. There are top quality hotel rooms in Christchurch from US$150 to US$500. There are a large number of motels with accommodation from US$75. Cheap tariffs apply in the few backpacker establishments from below US$20 per person. The YMCA too offers budget accommodation.

There is a free shuttle bus service in the centre of Christchurch and buses operate between the city and suburbs. Because traffic is often light on roads out of Christchurch, hiring a car is said to be the best way to get around and enjoy the city and surrounding districts. Taxis and hire car firms are freely available. For those who like trams and double-decker buses, Christchurch has a few of each.

There is debate about traveling out of and into Christchurch whether by car or by train. If you love train travel there is no choice. You’ll definitely see more by car but there’s not much driving hassle sitting back in the train. New Zealand is pretty much a tip-free zone. It is not expected. However a tourist who gets exceptional service may well wish to give a tip of 10%. It’s up to you.

Christchurch is an international airport and as such, strict quarantine protocols are in place. Do not bring any food or animal products into New Zealand and if in any doubt, declare your item to Customs.

Like most cities, Christchurch has particular times of the year when something special happens. The arts festivals in Christchurch offer a wide range of superb attractions. Then there is the World’s Busker Festival and the flower parades in November are something special.
