Pay the hotel when you stay

Bangkok, the international face of Thailand, is one of Asia’s busiest tourism and transportation hubs. As such, there is no shortage of accommodation options. And wherever you stay, you will likely be treated to the sort of traditional Thai hospitality that makes the city such a friendly and popular destination- not to mention affordable.

For the budget traveller and backpacker, the place to be is Khao San Road. Located in the Banglamphu area, this is Bangkok’s famous strip of market stalls, Internet café’s, restaurants, bars and wandering travellers. Part of the Old City, it is very close to many of Bangkok’s must-see sights, such as the Grand Palace and Wat Po. For this reason, it is guesthouse central. Tuc-tuc drivers will likely know the area, but to ease yourself into Bangkok more comfortably, a standard taxi is recommended. It will cost you around US$4.50 from the airport.

Once there, for around US$3 you can find somewhere to stay. However, at this price it might be a bit gritty! There are many better options for those willing to pay a little more. There is a proliferation of good hostel accommodation and for this reason it is strongly advised that you take the time to look around for yourself to get the best deal available.

Most travellers report hostel conditions in Bangkok to be of a very good standard, although there are certainly some dives out there. But rooms are generally clean and comfortable. For example, clean dorm and ensuite rooms can be found on Phitsanulok Road. It is close to the action, but not too close, so it’s actually fairly quiet. You can find accommodation there for around US$6 per night.

On Khao San Road, established and reputable guesthouse rooms with a shower and hot water cost around US$9. If you’re happy with cold water they are a little cheaper! Other budget options may cost up to US$18 a night, but this is not unreasonable if the standard matches up. Elsewhere, similarly priced hostels can be found in the popular Silom and Sukhumvit neighbourhoods.

For those at the mid-upper end of the scale, luxury business suites and modern hotels are plentiful. On Khao San Road you can find fully air-conditioned rooms, with singles priced around US$40 per night and doubles at US$55. This is for those seeking a little more comfort, with swimming pool, shops, licensed bar and 24-hour room service.

Luxury boutiques and 5-star hotels in Bangkok are amongst the finest in the world and have everything from Thai culture and cooking courses to spas and sports centres. For example, in the south you can find a modern city sanctuary on the Chao Phraya river- but it will come at a price!
