There is certainly a wide range of accommodation styles in Auckland. The tourist or business traveler can choose from a good selection of hotels as well as apartments and bed and breakfast locations. There are hotels in the city center and the surrounding suburbs. Room prices start from around US$95 ranging to US$165. The NZ dollar has not been as strong as many other currencies and may offer excellent value for overseas visitors.

There are many budget hotels and backpacker hostels where the cost of a room with up to 4 people sharing makes for a very reasonable expenditure. Many of these low-priced places are within easy walking distance of the city. And even accommodation in the suburbs may have its rewards as Auckland has two huge harbors and views can be spectacular. Be aware of the departure tax when flying out of Auckland [or any other NZ airport]. You must pay NZ$25 per person in cash and thus have your boarding pass duly stamped. No stamp means no departure.

Like many cities around the world, some of Auckland’s central city streets are popular and safe with vibrant shops and eateries by day but can become less savory by night. Check with your hotel before venturing out. Being an island country, New Zealand is very particular about animal and food products being brought into the country. Declare everything just in case.

Watch out too for the barriers on the Auckland Harbor Bridge. They get shifted for peak travel times and the machinery to do the shifting can be an unwelcome surprise for unwary motorists.

Tipping is optional in Auckland. If you feel you have received exceptional service by all means give a tip of around 10%. On public holidays, hotels and restaurants may add a service charge. But this extra fee does not go to staff.
